I completed this workout twice last year. Once during spring break on 3/16 and another on Good Friday on 4/22. I did outside ride for training, but never did as a public event (which was one of the original goal of the year. Grrrr). When I do 100 miles for training, I only do it at White Rock Lake.

It is difficult to schedule and complete a century ride. I only do outside 100- mile training at the Lake because it has plenty of restrooms and 7-11 on the route, it is fairly traffic-free and lots of riders are present. IN CASE anything happens, these are crucial points. It is also about 9-mile loop. If ANYTHING happens, I am only 5 mile away from my car maximum. The Hardcore 100 DVD eliminates a lot of these concerns, but you still have to plan around training plan so that you have enough physical rest for strength and mental toughness factor. For the reference, this blog entry is the Live Coverage from New Year’s Day.

Now that I have done this four times and Coach published his program online, I can reflect about the program when I am feeling like a regular citizen. To me, each disc is hard in its own way. I say so because in a way, the first disc is most difficult. I remember first time, I finished the first disc and maybe I should not continue. Luckily because my training built up really slowly for the first outside century in 2009, I learned to analyze what I need to continue riding. At that point, I decided what I needed was plain resting. I must have rested good 30 minutes or longer before going onto the second disc, while watching aftermath of horrible earthquake in Japan on TV. This is consistent with outside ride. First 10 miles is probably the longest 10 miles for me and if I am not prepared properly, the first rest stop is the biggest blessing. I remember the first disc was very hard UNTIL today.

With Super 6 program, I have been doing aero workout so much this week and I have gotten so good at staying at aero workout. I wouldn’t call it easy and I still had to go to spontaneous bathrooms, but I felt best ever coming out. My recollection from last year was that the last disc is not as bad as it is said. I quickly identified today’s problem during the second disc. I was feeling my legs. This usually doesn’t happen because I seem to have strong legs. During the Challenge, I literally lived in compression clothes all December long. My priority was that my legs don’t give up on me. First consume the other half of the pickle from New Year’s Day. Pour water in the plastic container to get any juice out of it. Consume more GU Chomps than I thought needed. And at the rest after the second disc, I put on my favorite compression socks.

What I found myself doing today was that the 1st set of the second disc, where you will change the gear to the harder with rather high cadence was probably too hard. I was staring at the cadence number and one time I looked at the screen and effort level was in actually aero range. To be honest, I don’t know how my heart rate cannot go above AT trying over 80 cadence in big chain 14, though. :-0 So I made sure I stayed under AT for the second set. So I came to the last disc. It is a hard workout, but it also has a long rest, which makes it manageable. Maybe the reason I thought the last disc was not that bad is because it is always heavily advertised so and at the second last set, Coach lets us “choose our poison”. Maybe I was conservative. I made sure I do all out for the last sprint, but managed not to say any R-rated comments that would have gone to my imaginary brand new DVD, “Spinervals R: Comments You Always Knew Athletes Made”.

Finishing up an event feels like an accomplishment and as Coach says in PDF this program is more of an event than a workout. I am grateful Coach put together this event so that we can participate in one at our convenience.

Main stream phobia in January gym 1/18/12

When I visited Allen gym for elliptical on Monday, I noticed that the parking lot was so full! The school was off for holiday and I saw lots of parents and their children. I also observed more people who looked like they just started to come here for New Year’s resolution purposes. Ah, it is that time of the year. You may recall my loner attitude at the gym and intolerance over girly conversations in the gym. Grrr. It is usually for a couple of months. Grrr.

I keep myself busy observing others in the gym and my pet peeve is to try to spot somebody with heart rate monitor. Now that my weights part is taken care of by Coach Troy in StrEndurance, I only hang out in cardio areas. But even so, including in the locker room, I am lucky to spot one or two during my visit. Sometimes it is surprising that runners who really in good form running, do not have any kind of monitoring at all by covering the display on the treadmill. But almost all of exerciser have music listening device (iPod?) and talking and texting on mobile phone (iPhone?). Some read books on machines. I am probably not versatile when it comes to spreading attention. Every time I read posts and look at the photos of the people, such as, who is doing Coach Troy (like Tough Love), texting like and talking on the phone (like Nancy) or studying like Ashwant Bud Singh Suri AND following football or marathon trial, I am in awe. I cannot do anything else, but to follow Coach unless it is strictly steady zone and cadence. Oh, speaking of main stream phobia and iPod and iPhone: I am way too nervous about Apple becoming so main stream. Because I had to use Japanese on computer, Apple computers have always been my choice, even when I could hardly find software for it. You had to be in education or graphic design otherwise using Apple was nothing but too expensive. (I wonder if Alan Macdougall could relate.)

Well, I will give you a quick update now that I am in Allen gym in case you are curious or Paul Kriegler. After a couple of days I posted about my visit to Allen gym on 1/5/12, Bruce left me a message on Facebook saying, “Where did you go? I realized I haven't seen your posts and then I can't find you in my friends?” I simply replied, “I stayed here all though the holiday. I periodically reorganize friends and likes pages.” His programs from NewLeaf still come to my email address everyday. In fact, it came twice today. Was he ever paying any attention? At the gym, I spotted who I had a guess to be another metabolic specialist. I asked him if he knew Bruce was in or not. He told me he knew he was not in. Well, maybe I did retail part-time with tough customers for too long. He could have offered to relay that I was looking for him, could have suggested ways to get in touch with him, or inquired if I were interested in metabolic testing. I am not sure what kind of micromanagement is going on at Lifetime, but I would like it to be the best gym I know of. Grrrr.

I repeat. I have a severe case of main stream phobia. I remember as a kid growing up in Japan, somebody asked what my favorite saying was. I replied with 十人十色 (じゅうにんといろ、character literally reads ten people ten colors and my favorite translation would be ”Different strokes for different folks”). People admire Japanese culture that values harmony among people, but the flip side of it is that we do things that please others in order to fit in. As a kid, I wanted to be different. I wanted to be unique. And I ended up spending almost half of my life in a foreign country being a resident alien, educating young adults, now who could have been my children’s age. Well, another semester started yesterday. Let’s see how we do.

Today I would like to make a speech about my semester goals. I have two goals this semester. The first one is about Japanese class and the second is about exercise.

The first goal is about Japanese class. I have three classes this semester. My goal is to go home after writing the following day’s lesson plans and checking homework everyday. Because I have a calendar in my office, I go home after entering checkmarks on the calendar when I accomplished the goal.

The second goal is about exercise. I started Cycling DVD program in January. It is a six-week program. I have to do cycling, yoga and one more cardio. It is very tough. The program ends on February 10th. On that day, I intend to go to Palm Springs, California and do 58-mile event. Then I ride more than 50 miles in an event once a month until fall. I would like to train so that I can ride 100 miles in September.

Wrapping up and looking ahead 1/16/12

One last holiday to hang on to my freedom. After reading print-out of Super 6 program, I found out I missed some secondary workouts to fit in the schedule.

I have had difficulty in catching the right number of secondary workouts from the calendar. So I will write it up here for my reference and for others, if it is any way helpful.

Week 3 Run/Elliptical 3 StrEndurance/yoga 3
Week 4 Run/Elliptical 2 StrEndurance/yoga 3 Wildcard cardio 1
Week 5 Run/Elliptical 4 StrEndurance/yoga 1 Wildcard cardio 1
Week 6 Run/Elliptical 2 StrEndurance/yoga 2 Wildcard cardio 1

Notes:
- Coach schedules Strength/Flexibility on 1/21 on the day of 26.0 - The Hardcore 100!
- Week 5 workouts are hard and long even with a wildcard rest day. 1-3 elliptical workouts might need to be skipped.
- Priority of week 5 and 6 will become to be prepared for Tour de Palm Springs and riding outside will take priority.
- Because of traveling to CA, wildcard cardio needs to be skipped.
- The ride itself falls onto another 26.0 - The Hardcore 100 day, but we will be only doing 58 miles since we will be on rented bike.

Believe me, this holiday season was all about training with Coach Troy. I had a lot of fun writing this blog, too. (And I still owe an follow-up entry of wonderful Rick Sobona’s) Yesterday, I went to Allen gym for elliptical while Tony attended a spin class. He mentioned the instructor is listed as Mitch, which I vaguely recalled from Cycling Club ride schedule. To my surprise, the class was Super 6 LTF version! Mitch, now my friend on Facebook, was running 30.0 - Muscular Endurance PLUS! It was great to see Coach Troy and huge cycling studio people-full with LTF Cycling Club jerseys on screen and a few people in the physical studio. Because Mitch actually didn’t have to do the workout himself, he was available chatting with me and others. I got to meet with him, talked about all the training I have been doing with Coach Troy and I went on and on. Mitch took my email address and I asked him to keep in touch with me. It was so delightful to get hooked up with him and Cycling Club details.

Looking ahead: Finishing up Super 6 program only takes me up to mid-February, still leaving sometime before the outside riding season in Texas. Texas springs are OK, but can get pretty stormy. Really good riding season doesn’t start until late April or so. The end of Super 6 is the season opening outside ride in California and I have about 12 weeks in spring semester including one week of spring break. As Michelle Sewell Spina knows, I have been entertaining the idea of getting a coach. I hired a coach when I first started and I can see benefits of different types of coaching or lack of thereof. I have been in structured training for quite sometime now and scheduling sometimes becomes quite handful trying to make everybody’s priorities into account. In a way, I feel like I can have general workout structure according to the school schedule and refer to some training plans from Tony’s books and elsewhere and plug in Coach Troy’s DVDs. He has programs for different purposes that vary in length. If I want a little more structured training, I could use Coach Troy’s services as well now that I am a member. But I think my issue, once I have more time to ride outside after the semester, is get checked outside riding skills while training with a program. As much as I had maximum fun trying to picture Coach Troy’s virtual training in 2015, I feel like good old face-to-face coaching may be what I need.

Now I have to come up with this semester’s goals. I will be assigning one-minute speech to my second-year on the first chapter cycle of the semester. The goals are Japanese study goal and also in other areas. Last semester’s assignment was quite popular with now-third year group. As I always come up with model speech and present on the first day, I will have to write mine today. What should I say about my fitness goals???
