(Added 1/9/13: Please also read my friend Michelle Sewell Spina's The HardCore 100: Spinervals 26.0 blog post.)
Happy New Year! It is Januray 1, 2012, the morning of 2012 Tour de Flores Virtual Century ride (aka Spinervals Competition 26.0 - The Hardcore 100)!
3:35am
Waking up. Turn off the heat of the house. Post New Year’s card on Facebook, check out others’ post and be impressed with Susan Thomas’ TT data!
3:50am
Weigh myself. I don’t feel too tired, but still trying to wake up. Drink room-temperature water and Accelerade in Clean Bottle. I can feel legs a little. I didn’t think I am hungry, but heat up what I call ride pasta, Marie Callender's fresh flavor steamers Chicken Piccata.Get dressed with workout bra, bib and my favorite pink compression socks. Pickle to feeding table.
4:00am
Send an email to Mom in Japan along with New Year’s Eve party photos
4:10am
Finally food cooled and eat with water in Clean Bottle to get most out of diluted Accelerade. Exchange email with Mom and people on Facebook.
4:25am
Make a new bottle of full-strength for after the ride. Left ankle clicks and feels a little tight. Drink diet coke with BCAA and Burn 60. Keep drinking. Set up 3 clean bottles with Accelerade and water 32-oz bottles of water!
4:35am
Go to the bathroom and get ice bath going. Finish pre-ride GU gel. Set up GU gel, GU Blueberry Pomegranate chomps and mini Cliff bars. More Facebook messaging with Susan Thomas.
4:45am
Put DigiFit Connect to iPad. Garmin turned on and GPS off (Alex Barnett’s advice), put on heart rate chest strap. Put paper towel for sneezing, set DVD and TV remote in CycleOps Bike Thong. Start TV and DVD. Turn fan on in the living room.
4:53am
Last bathroom visit and finally on bike. Go through Coach’s note for easy spin warm up
5:00am
Actual workout starts. Wave to Nancy during the introduction.
5:14am
Troy comments on estimate burnt calorie for today’s workout. My estimate about 3000 (Notes from future: actual number 3500)
5:27am
Priority during this disc is to keep heart rate in zone 2. Staying on high end of zone 2.
5:33am
Quick pause on rest. Bathroom and grab 2 bottles of diet coke for caffeine.
5:45am
Feeling that maybe fatigue has built up over past month. GU gel consumed. Decided to open up a pickle at the end of the first disc
5:54am
A guy wearing Woohoo! Chocolate jersey reminds me of chocolate milk in the fridge.
5:57am
Quick rest stop to grab the chocolate milk. Best part of Virtual Century ride is rest stops show up when I need and they are well-equipped!
6:20am
Done with the big 60 min. set and another quick potty break
6:29am
Coach, please don’t mention isometric squat!
6:38am
What I thought was built-in 3 min. rest on first disc was the end of it! Added ice, drank pickle juice and Dog went out to the front yard for her business.
6:46am
DigiFIt lost sensors. Half bag of GU Chomps consumed. Start the second disc!
7:02am
During the first set of second disc, I am keeping heart rate under AT. But from the speed I see, I may get better mileage than last two. (Notes from future: last time 80 miles, today 88 miles.)
7:10am
Chain dropped while shifting down to small ring, but fixed.
7:13am
Chain dropped again not being able to go up to big ring, but fixed again.
7:21am
Another quick potty stop
7:43am
Coach mentions a man’s reading at 40 miles. I am at 38 miles after a long warm-up. Not bad.
7:52am
Built-in 3 min. break. More bites on pickle. Change outfit. Feed the Dog.
8:02am
Training partner/husband Tony joins from 2nd set on 2nd disc.
8:32am
Coach says we should be somewhere around 50 miles. I am at 48.5.
9:06am
2nd disc done! Getting more iced water and more bites of pickle. Ate two pieces of Orowheat Sandwich Thins.
9:15am
Starting the last disc.
10:07am
Tory says we should be about 70 miles. I am right at 70!
10:17am
Last break. Getting more iced water. One more chocolate milk.
10:28am
Coach mentions 80 miles. I am at 74. Another GU gel consumed.
10:34am
More bites of pickle (Notes from future: implies fatigue)
10:38am
Troy forgets to have us stand up while admiring wattage of people
10:54am
Tough set, but 2 minute rest is serving well. Heart rate is dropping bottom of zone 3.
11:11am
Is anybody shouting from the floor? Or is it just me?
11:15am
Last set done at 86.5 miles. How could anybody agree to be video taped after this workout?!? Soft pedal to bring heart rate down to zone 1. Total miles 88. 10% more than last year!
