Greg 8/19/10
I don’t remember if I wrote an entry about Greg, my personal trainer at Allen gym. He and I communicated when I was trying to do weight loss in the summer of 2009 briefly over Discussion Board on the Internet. Back then, I thought Allen gym was too far. Turned out it is actually closer than Plano gym. I started going to Allen gym for Stan’s Monday morning class as it has a dedicated studio and the class is quieter. Then I saw this display for CardioPoint for bike. So I went to personal trainer desk and got an appointment. That was the beginning of this summer.
I thought I was meeting with the trainer I talked to, but what a pleasant surprise, it was Greg! And he recognized my name. I did CardioPoint on LeMond bike, we sat down and I explained that I had been trying to figure out why I felt so tired all the time. He explained things and decided to give me better program that I have been doing that I got from Jeff. Now I am starting to think he is an elite trainer, sent from headquarter in Minnesota to improve the fitness level of our state of Texas!
And his plan worked! Unlike Jeff’s program, his cardio program was different almost everyday and worked on mainly lower zones to start with. This was a surprise to me, but you actually get good workout instead of going straight to zone 3, stay there and get exhausted (although calories are surely burnt). At the re-assessment, my base was up, my lower zones shifted, but my AT was almost the same. This meant my body learned how to burn calories more efficiently.
For weight training-wise, he was very accommodating and creative about giving me the program I can stick with during my long hotel stay in Kansas City this summer. I still don’t have 6-pack, but my body fat went down from 18% to 16% at the last assessment. That is pretty low for women.
Then he was presented this crazy cycling training plan for me to prepare for 100 mile ride. It is a good point to start power stage of periotization of weight training, but my exercise time is taken up mostly by cycling training. He decided all he could do is to split the weight training upper and lower and gave me pretty hard power stage exercises for lower and 24-hour fitness friendly upper program. I was pretty careful and apprehensive about ploymetrics exercises, so I asked for some suggestions for warm-up. He met me yesterday to show me with no charge! And then there is no room for him to put cardio program! I said after Wish ride and cycling season, I will calm down and just try to maintain and be ready for the next cycling season over cool weather time. I will have to maintain my level of lower leg strength, maintain or improve my cardio capacity and maybe lose a few pounds. I can’t take risks for under eating while I am trying to ride 100 miles. But losing a few pounds will help me going up the hills.
Tony and I also went to his metabolism workshop. It was a great way to review what I learned with Jeff and got more insights. Tony was quite happy about the workshop as well.
My next meeting and assessment with Greg is during the fall break, early October. By then, I will be done with public rides and will be ready for a change. I am all up for his interesting cardio interval programs that change all the time. I wish I could tote him around at the gym (“best” way he put), but at least I have myCoach program with him (“better” way he would say) and it is certainly better than what I was going to do for the summer: reading magazines and pick out program (“good” way he put). Thank you, Greg and keep up the great work with me!
