Resolution 5k & 1 mile Four Legged-Friend Walk 1/11/14
I started running last year because I needed to do Du and finished the year with same format 5k race. I made under 30 min., but then started to doubt maybe the distance was a little off because it was a hand-made event. December was a bike-focused month and I slowly started with Coach Todd. He did various testing this week and agreed starting out with 5k to set up a start zone would be a good idea.
Even better was it had 1 mile Four Legged-Friend Walk so that Tony and Grace can participate. I felt a little bad having this event on Saturday, possibly taking out a precious chance to ride for Tony.
The weather could not be more beautiful. The temperature was in 40's, which is the same as last year's Doggie 5k, but no wind, lots of sun and my body must have gotten used to the cold, too. I didn't bother wearing a jacket to warm up; just jumped out of the car and started to warm up with other people. The location is Middle school and Elementary school joined together on city trail system: PERFECT place for such an event. It was close to where Tony's office and Flower Mound where I met Coach Troy.
This time, both of us were given bib numbers and mine had a imprinted timing chip. Grace fit Lady's old Pawdida's shirt and I pinned her number there. Registration and expo area was on the soccer field and it had plenty of soft surface to warm up. . They even organized about 4-min warm up session before the start. So Mayor of Highland Village started the gun for 5k and after five minutes, doggies and humans started out another course that sounded a lot hillier. Coach Todd's spec was to run at 5.5-6.5 RPE and monitor HR, since we still have to interpret the test data from this week. The organizer was explaining that there was a uphill around 1 mile point and all down hill, negative split kind of fast course. Heart rate numbers started out around 140 acting correctly, so I planned on keeping around 150 before the hill then about 160 after the hill and second half. I watched heart rate and cadence to be over 180. Ended up a little faster than spec.
Grace and Tony also came in 4th in DG! Almost podium again! And I was 9th in AG out of 40. I am surprised!
